Bridging the cultural divide for new arrivals
Refugees face tremendous challenges on arrival in the US. Navigating language and cultural differences, and overcoming the confusion with how American medical care, social services, and schools operate, can be intimidating – especially when many refugees survived severe trauma in their home country. HEAL is an organization started and managed by refugees to help others adapt to their new life. With a well-earned reputation for conflict resolution and community advocacy, HEAL helps ease the transition for those who have relocated far away from their family.
The history of this great city has many chapters that begin with peoples coming from some other part of the globe. Currently, the City of Buffalo welcomes 40% of the refugees relocated within the State of New York. Even though they come from many different countries, there is a common desire to start a new life. There is a measurable financial and social benefit where refugees relocate both in the property values of the neighborhoods where they live and the economic engine of the region as a whole. We at HEAL want to support arriving individuals and families so this chapter is a story where everyone benefits from a strong, stable, and diverse community.
